WayCool hello
WayCool sorry I don't speak French
TrueDD hello WayCool
WayCool can I ask a question in English here?
gnomii hum
WayCool :)
gnomii you can ask on #openbsd
TrueDD if you speak slowly ! lol
gnomii un canadien qui ne sait pas parler francais
gnomii ou va le monde ...
WayCool ... so seriously, should I leave this channel?
TrueDD ça dépend où au canada
WayCool yep, I am from Canada but from the west...
WayCool this channel showed more users, so I decided to try it first
* User414 has quit ("Leaving")
TrueDD ok, try
TrueDD if it's too hard, you'll dont get any answers
WayCool thank's :), all I wanted to ask is: how can I check a list of packages available for OpenBSD on the web?
gnomii you can stay, but if nobody answers, please no insult :)
WayCool gnomii: no prob :)
gnomii WayCool: on openbsd.org, there is a web page with the list
WayCool that's the first place I went through but, I can't seem to find where the applications list is...
gnomii http://www.openbsd.org/3.9_packages/
gnomii hum
gnomii the webpage for 4.0 doesn't exist
WayCool but isn't 4.0 the latest release?
TrueDD yes
gnomii yes
uberbsd yes
TrueDD since november the 1
gnomii you can go to the ftp :)
WayCool so am I to understand the the new openbsd system "base" is available but there are no packages for it yet?
gnomii no, there are some package
gnomii ftp://ftp.arcane-networks.fr/pub/OpenBSD/4.0/packages/i386
gnomii here, you can see a list
WayCool is this a "less official" source for packages?
gnomii euh
gnomii yes
gnomii wait
TrueDD ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.0/packages/i386/

WayCool thank's guys, you are great!
TrueDD you're welcom
TrueDD welcome
WayCool I looked through some app versions and see that they are somewhat behind the times; in your opinion, how long does it take on average for a new ver of a widely used app (like Firefox) to make it into the OpenBSD packages?
WayCool I realize that due to openbsd design philosophy it takes longer than in othrer os's but I am trying to get the sense of the time involved
WayCool guys?
gnomii hum
WayCool did you catch my question or shall I repeat it?
gnomii i understand
gnomii (i think)
gnomii but, i can't answers
WayCool take your time :)
WayCool from what you've observed, how long do you think it takes?
gnomii i trust openbsd, and i don't watch the version
gnomii like firefox, the new version 2, i don't think you can find in the ports or package
gnomii but you can install with the sources
gnomii but, you break the openbsd politic
WayCool is it hard to build from source?
WayCool I am not a programer...
gnomii hum, you read the INSTALL text
TrueDD WayCool, you don't need to be a programmer to install un program from the sources
gnomii oh no
gnomii why do you want install openbsd ?
TrueDD you don't must to program it, just build the program with a few commands
gnomii yes :)
WayCool I am currently on Windows XP, and I wanted to explore other os's, especially secure ones
gnomii merde, c'était quoi pour relancer le reseau de la machine ?
WayCool sorry, I don't understand...
gnomii i search a commande to reboot the lan interface
gnomii so, i recommend freebsd to explore an other os
gnomii it's more oriented workstation than openbsd
WayCool why would you recomend freebsd vs openbsd, (since I am interested in security)
gnomii in fact, what do you want do with openbsd ?
WayCool general purpose, but I like the idea of maximum security
TrueDD WayCool, maximum security in default installation
TrueDD but it's possible to secure a FreeBSD as well as OpenBSD if you want
TrueDD it's simply more of work
gnomii good night
WayCool good night
uberbsd good night
TrueDD good night
WayCool TrueDD: so if its more work why not just start with openbsd?
gnomii faudrait lui dire qu' il ne risque de ne pas trouver tout ce qu' il a besoin dans openbsd, et pis niveau version des softs, c'est pas trop ca
TrueDD je vais essayer avec mon pauvre anglais ! :)
TrueDD because OpenBSD is a server oriented system, and you may have some dificults to find general usage packages ported for it
* WatchiX (n=WatchiX@81.56.199.61) has joined #openbsd.fr
WayCool so there are more packages ported and thus available for freeBSD than for open?
TrueDD yes
WayCool is it hard to secure freebsd to the level of openbsd?
TrueDD a litle, for the same reasons that OpenBSD have less packages than FreeBSD and the versions of these packages is less recent
TrueDD because you will need wait a long time to find very tested packages to obtain a very secure system
TrueDD as secure as OpenBSD
WayCool after reading whe bsd web pages I got the impression that the two bsd systems have lot's of similarities and if building an app from source is not hard I maybe I could get something is I need it?
TrueDD well, you can take an OpenBSD and make it a general purpose system, and take a FreeBSD an make it a very secure system, but you must ask your self the question that what I will do with my system, and which is my priority.
TrueDD does your system must be more secure, or more general purposes
TrueDD and take the one is the more near of the answer
WayCool makes sence, another question: is java run time environment ported to openbsd?
TrueDD I think so, but I'm not sure
WayCool I can't seem to find it in the packages listed on the sites you recomended
TrueDD yes, of course
TrueDD OpenBSD is a free system
TrueDD and the mirrors we recommended contains only free software
WayCool ok, so where would I get a openbsd version of java's runtime env?
TrueDD but jre isn't free
TrueDD on the sun site I presume
WayCool I checked, there is stuff for linux, but not a word about bsd
WayCool any ideas?
TrueDD you can take kaffe that is en free jre compatible VM
TrueDD a free
WayCool VM?
TrueDD virtual machine
WayCool got it :) and it will work just as well to run java environment apps?
TrueDD yes
WayCool :)) good news
WayCool one more question: what is the recomended hardware for running openbsd?
* WatchiX has quit ("Quitte")
TrueDD you don't need a great performances machine to work with OpenBSD
TrueDD but it's depending to the usage that you expect to have
TrueDD what king of things you shall do ?
WayCool I have a Pentium I @ 200 MHz with 256 Ram, is that enough to have a fast running system with openbsd and java?
WayCool the intent is to be able to do net trading
TrueDD it's a bit small
WayCool what would you recomend as a good set of hardware for the job (under OpenBSD)?
TrueDD do you expect to use a graphic environment ?
WayCool would be nice but if there is a good alternative - not essential
TrueDD ok, you can use it in console environment,
TrueDD but you must verify that the tools for do that don't need a graphical environment
* mortheres has quit ("Quitte")
WayCool I understand, that for net trading diff brokerage houses make their own custom apps that run under java so I don't believe any additional graphical env is needed
TrueDD if you are sure, you can try with it
WayCool I don't believe I really need Gnome or KDE, but some kind of a window manager would be nice - like, maybe Flukbox. Do you think that could run ok on my sys?
WayCool or maybe xfce (I hope I got the name right...) ?
* Texou (n=Texou@unaffiliated/texou) has joined #openbsd.fr
TrueDD I don't recommend you xfce for a small system like yours
TrueDD I don't know Flukbox
TrueDD but you can try ion3
WayCool how about IceWM?
TrueDD I did never work with it, I can't tell anything you about it
WayCool so you think ion3 is the best windows manager for an old system like mine?
TrueDD I only think it's a very lite environment, and that is perfect to work with graphical tools on an old machine
TrueDD but I don't know all graphical environments
WayCool I really apreciate your help :)
TrueDD you'r welcome
WayCool do you think that a new page for 4.0 aps will be created soon on OpenBSD's web site?
* Texou (n=Texou@unaffiliated/texou) has left #openbsd.fr
TrueDD yes I think
TrueDD there isn't reasons
WayCool I was able to view the link to 3.9 (http://www.openbsd.org/3.9_packages/) but I can't figure out which link on the OpenBSD's page leads to it?
TrueDD I presume that it will be something like the same with 4.0 on the place of 3.9
WayCool do you know which area of openbsd's page leads to the 3.9 package list?
WayCool *the most current version's package list?
* lejoker has quit ("Ex-Chat")
* TTris is away: plus là ... au taff
TrueDD I'm not sure to anderstand your question
TrueDD oh yes
WayCool do you know which area of openbsd's page leads to the 3.9 package list?
WayCool [15:22] <WayCool> *the most current version's package list?
WayCool sorry, hold on
WayCool do you know which area of openbsd's page leads to the most current system's version package list?
TrueDD no, I don't, I don't pass by the site to find packages
TrueDD you can find them by ftp
