In addition to the Teachers who volunteer for the PATH program, there
is a vital unit of those who volunteer and are known as Student
Teachers. This group is made up of high school and college students
16 ? 21 years of age who are interested in assisting students.
Student Teachers participate alongside Teachers and deserve the same
respect and recognition. PATH is delighted to furnish record-keeping
and confirmation of hours for Community Service for National Honor
Society, Beta Club in high school and fraternities and sororities in
college as well as other service organizations.
Student Teachers are 16-21 years of age and maintain at least a ?B?
average (80%) in academic subjects. This can be verified by a school
supervisor on official letterhead, stating age, grade level, and
approximate level of achievement. While PATH requests a minimum of 4
hours of time spent assisting with homework from our teachers, we are
more lenient with Student Teachers and are delighted to cooperate with
them during exams, school vacations, and other school-related
situations.

A. Purpose of PATH and the Student Teaching Program
One approach known to be successful in education is that of ?Student
Teachers,? or students teaching other students. To provide for such
valuable assistance, the PATH Student TeacHing program has been
established as a part of PATH?s beginning..
The goals of a Student Teaching program in Teaching Rooms of PATH are:
* To get students involved in the PATH tutoring program, thus
expanding to students the sense of community that already exists among
PATH teachers;
* To provide tutoring services to those students who will relate to or
learn best from another student or a person of their own general age
group;
* To provide experience and responsibility for the Student Teachers;
* To provide teaching assistance for the PATH teachers;
NOTE: Student Teachers who are assisting in a live Tutoring Room may
only participate when there is at least one adult teacher. Qualified
Student Teachers may assist by responding to Message Board questions,
Email questions as well as in the live rooms. Such answers will be
monitored by a Board Leader and/or Room Leader. Student Teachers may
only assist using their designated Student Teaching screen name.
Members of the PATH Student Teaching team can help in one or more of
the tutoring areas, based on their performance and their length of
time with PATH.
1. The tutoring areas or rooms are for assisting students with
academic questions. Elementary rooms serve grades 1 ? 5, Middle School
rooms serve grades 6-8, High School rooms serve grades 8 ? 12, and
college rooms serve any college student (ONLY college Student Teachers
assist in these rooms). These rooms are staffed with PATH volunteers
who have been approved and trained. Rooms are designated for academic
subject designation?English, Science, Math, History, and Information
or Elective for general subjects. There is also one Foreign Language
room. Student Teachers will schedule their time to assist in these
rooms.
The PATH rooms are not used for conducting business or advertising,
for social chats, nor for topics not related to tutoring. These
policies are designed to keep the PATH program organized and as useful
as possible to users.
2. Message Board and Email areas are divided into 4
general areas which parallel the room divisions exactly. No schedule
is required. Student Teachers check the Boards and their Email for
questions each time they access PATH.
B. Student Teacher Participation Rewards include the ability to
access the PATH private area and access a dedicated management team
devoted to solving technical problems and helping with PATH questions.
Student Teachers who participate regularly in assisting students for
six months or longer may request and receive a letter of
certification for school Community Service or for the service
organization. The Student Teacher is responsible for making sure the
organization will accept these credits.
C. Limitations for Student Teachers
The following guidelines have been set for when/where/and how much
Student Teachers can volunteer.
1. All tutoring time, minimum 3 hours is requested, additional
scheduled time, and drop-ins, must occur within the limits of time
devoted to free activity and must not take time from studies or school
activities.
2. The participant shall agree in advance that their home and
school responsibilities take priority over PATH and Student Teaching
participation and use. For these reasons, the Student PATH management
may set general and individual maximum time limits to participation.
D. Reporting Procedures
Student Teachers need to complete and e-mail a tutoring report every
time they assist, weekly during training, and continue the weekly
report for as long as they are volunteering in PATH. This is for
record keeping purposes. This also helps when a formal verification
of time spent assisting for Community Service credit is requested.
Student Teachers who have properly assisted for six months or longer
are welcome to list their Student Teacher membership on personal
resumes and college or job applications. Formal letters of
recommendation may be provided by PATH Management for those
participating for at least 6 months.
E. Absences
If a Student Teacher ever needs to miss a shift, a notification should
be sent to the Executive Director as soon as. Student Teachers will be
excused from the shift as long as they let the designated people know,
even if notification is received within 24 hours AFTER missing the
shift.
Supervisors are required to report any unexcused absences during their
shifts, and Student Teachers are considered unexcused if no absence
notification is sent. Student Teachers with an unexcused absence will
receive a follow-up. PATH is very serious about maintaining a
collegial atmosphere which means that what happens to one of our
members is important to us.
F. Behavior
Student Teachers MUST set an example by following PATH?s requests for
professionalism while in AND outside of the PATH site. Student obtain
any homework help needed from the PATH at times other than their
assistance time. When seeking homework help for themselves, they may
not expect preferential treatment because they are Student Teachers.
Everyone must go through the appropriate channels to obtain help.
Student Teachers are expected to be polite to students, teachers, and
fellow Student Teachers at all times. Proper writing skills, grammar,
and spelling will be utilized.
Student Teachers are asked to respect the Chain Of Command. This means
when assisting in the rooms, the host or room leader is the Student
Teacher?s direct supervisor if problems that need immediate attention
occur with students, etc. Otherwise, Student Teachers will go to their
respective supervisor with any problems they may have.
Student Teachers must agree to keep information about students,
teachers and other tutors confidential, as well as private areas and
the information found within. They must be dependable and friendly and
follow proper procedures as outlined in the full version of the
Student Teaching Guidelines which was received upon application.
PATH management reserves the right to suspend or dismiss any Student
Teacher who does not follow these guidelines.
