okay first
I edited interfaces
to look like this:
# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)
# The loopback interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The first network card - this entry was created during the Debian installation
# (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1
then I restarted my network by going to /etc/init.d/ and entering
./networking restart
then I edited resolv.conf
with the comcast search server at the top
I put the netfirms nameservers below it (I bought a domain, havoc9.com. from netfirms)
instead of the IPs that were there previously
nameserver NS1.NETFIRMS.COM
nameserver NS2.NETFIRMS.COM
I put those two instead of the previous
because the hostname I used was nephenos
and the domain was havoc9.com
I then edited /etc/hosts to look like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost nephenos
192.168.0.100 nephenos.havoc9.com nephenos
192.168.0.101 virtual-ip1.example.com virtual-ip1
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
after that I set the hostname with
echo nephenos.havoc9.com > /etc/hostname
then I cd'd to /bin and did hostname -F /etc/hostname
After that I tried to apt-get some stuff but it didnt connect
so I decided to see if my internets were screwed on right...
I pinged google.com and got no response
my internets were definitely not screwed on right
