Thesis: Rwanda has had a rough history and the Genocide that has
happened in Rwanda is a testament to that. The Genocide in Rwanda
has not received nearly as much recognition as it should have and more
attention should paid to events like this in order to shape the future
into a more peaceful setting.
I. The Genocide in Rwanda was one of the largest Genocides in history.
A. An estimated 800,000 people were killed within a period of 100 days
B. Before the genocide started many people among the groups in Rwanda had
already been killed.
C. Rwanda was devastated by the genocide, entire families were wiped out.
II. The genocide was the result of tension built up over many years that finally
reached it's breaking point.
A. The president at the time, a Hutu was killed by a group of Tutsis, creating an
outrage.
B. The tense relations between the groups in Rwanda were well known and an
outbreak like this could have easily been foreshadowed.
III. There was a large lack of attention paid to the genocide and most people and
countries turned a blind eye.
A. The United Nations withdrew from Rwanda when 10 soldiers were killed.
B. Reporters and the U.N were calling the genocide a “civil war”, not wanting to
call it a genocide and raise concern.
C. After only a small amount of what would make up the total deaths, reporters
and the U.N pushed Rwanda to the side and moved on to other things.
