photomatt:	zedrdave: please stop spreading misinformation about akismet

error_bot:	photomatt: Sent 3 days, 6 hours, and 23 minutes ago: <CaiusCollege> I think we should either replace hello dolly with jimwhimpey's plugin, or include jimwhimpey's plugin in the core anyway

error_bot:	photomatt: Sent 1 day, 5 hours, and 41 minutes ago: <KevinMarks> to not put rel="tag' on ?cat=3 links http://www.andrewgrant.org/2006/10/18/technoratis-tag-for-wordpress-is-broken.html

phenny:	photomatt: 17 Oct 14:24Z <bunnywabbit_> ask photomatt what the best way to catch him is (e-mail? IM? Skype?)

error_bot:	photomatt: Sent 3 days, 6 hours, and 22 minutes ago: <CaiusCollege> theres a message for photomatt for you

phenny:	photomatt: 17 Oct 14:24Z <bunnywabbit_> tell photomatt it's about coCo-WP stuff of course

phenny:	photomatt: 17 Oct 14:25Z <bunnywabbit_> tell photomatt it's Gummywabbit on aim or gummywabbit@[the obvious msn thing]

photomatt:	whoa, lots of messages

Afterlife69:	wont let me select the damn text :-/

:	lightdifference has signed off IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)).

photomatt:	of course akismet is spread across different servers in different datacenters

photomatt:	some public, some private

zedrdave:	photomatt: which misinformation did I spread?

zedrdave:	I quiet clearly recall just saying that, precisely, I knew not much as it was all black box.

photomatt:	you implied akismet was on one server, which would be easy for you to DoS

photomatt:	you implied it would be easy for you to poison

zedrdave:	I don't think being on many servers ever made something DDoS-proof. merely harder to.

photomatt:	of course it's not ddos proof, even yahoo.com has been taken down before

zedrdave:	and I didn't imply it would be easy to poison... merely that relying on collective intelligent would make it so...

photomatt:	but that was in addition to your normal FUD about akismet's effectiveness

photomatt:	which is why it bothered me

zedrdave:	photomatt: exactly, hence my stance against centralized protection, on such a sensitive and targeted feature.

Afterlife69:	sif insult askimet :O

zedrdave:	photomatt: my one and only comment about effectiveness was "people who've used both seem to find more false positive".

zedrdave:	and I believe I've made it clear it wasn't my own testing...

:	HelLViS69 is now known as HelL`oFF.

zedrdave:	NOW if you wanna talk about FUD...

zedrdave:	I don't think I'm really the one with the most market-speak out to push my "product"...

Afterlife69:	licks zedrdave

photomatt:	so your educated second hand hearsay indicates it's less effective

photomatt:	okay

zedrdave:	photomatt: yes, and they are more than hearsay, they are over a few dozen people.

Erin:	bye guys

zedrdave:	and not "less effective". more prone to false positives.

Afterlife69:	licks Erin goodbye :)

zedrdave:	we all know it's a matter of where you put the threshold and the emphasis.

zedrdave:	more false positives might mean less false negatives, what do I know...

zedrdave:	just more important an issue in my eyes.

Erin:	hehe, watch yourself, Afterlife69. i don't fall into your +/- 2 yr cut ;)

gsnedders:	Erin: LOL

Afterlife69:	T.T

gsnedders:	Erin: how old are you? :P

:	HelL`oFF is now known as HelLViS69.

zedrdave:	anyway, I really don't care to troll on akismet vs. SK2. I was merely trying to answer polite inquiries.

Afterlife69:	waits to validate this...

zedrdave:	now if you don't want people spreading misinformation about akismet, there's one simple solution. release the code and detail its heuristics...

Erin:	gsnedders: 23 ;)

Afterlife69:	Pass here

photomatt:	if you haven't used it, and don't know anything about how it works, you don't seem to be particularly qualified to answer queries about it

gsnedders:	old people!

gsnedders:	runs!

Afterlife69:	Since i turned 17 ill take any age to 26 really

Erin:	yeah, be careful. wrinkles are contagious!

Afterlife69:	:)

photomatt:	especially to someone who says they're doing research

gsnedders:	photomatt: _none_ of us know how it works, that's part of his point.

Afterlife69:	27+ = too old

Erin:	ohhh how sad is it that 27 is branded as old

Erin:	sigh

Erin:	ok, i'm really going though ;) bye guys

gsnedders:	my sister is 31…

gsnedders:	Erin: adios

zedrdave:	photomatt: 1) I have used it. simply not consistently and not enough to have a strong opinion on its effectiveness 2) nobody is "qualified" to answer queries about it, from its very design as a black box server...

Erin:	chau

:	Erin has left #wordpress.

Afterlife69:	:O

photomatt:	I'm perfectly qualified to answer questions about it, I wrote it

MellerTime:	but you don't answer questions about it... :P

photomatt:	I do all the time

zedrdave:	is pretty sure he enjoined twidget to take his akismet questions to you, if that wasn't obvious enough.

zedrdave:	now, once again, the fact that you keep it all black box and therefore make it impossible to anybody to speak about it with certainty, certainly isn't a good argument in favour of ours shutting up...

Afterlife69:	Hmm, Will askimet be using SOAP in later versions?

photomatt:	when I'm asked about SK2 or BB, I just say they're written by nice folks and to try them out, both work in conjunction with Akismet

zedrdave:	I emitted mostly hypotheses on possible scenarios, and why I saw flaws in each of them.

photomatt:	I don't use either anymore, so

photomatt:	which are covered in the FAQ

zedrdave:	now if you care to post a detailed outlook of Akismet's heuristics and set up, I'll gladly give you a more insightful appreciation.

gsnedders:	photomatt: concerning http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2864 - it was discussed in the 26 August Meetup (which you were there at the time), and it was agreed upon that it may as well be broken. Also, has nothing that relies upon other parts of the WP core been broken in 2.1, so why can't this can't be?

zedrdave:	I recall a bit more than polite nods, in a few of the second-hand marketing speeches I've read or heard.

zedrdave:	and many uninformed things as well..

zedrdave:	I seriously must admit I don't really give a rat's ass...

photomatt:	the only weakness of both is that they're downloadable packages, which means when spammers change you have to update them

zedrdave:	I have an opinion about distributed vs. centralized spam fighting, that's about as far as it goes.

:	neglesaks has joined #wordpress.

photomatt:	gotta run

zedrdave:	for the rest, we both know I don't have any incentive in people d/ling SK2, not anywhere as much as you do. and therefore I don't care much to "defend" it. no more than I care to "crush" akismet unfairly.

zedrdave:	so lay down the paranoia and once again, feel free to clear things up publicly for us all...
