RENSSELAER EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION
As a service to our students and their parents, we are advising all students who we know rent offcampus housing either from a company using the name “Campus Habitat” or who reside at one
of the addresses listed in this memo, that the continuation of their ability to reside in that
residence may be in immediate jeopardy.
The facts as we have just come to know them regarding most of these residences are:
1. The landlord has not made mortgage payments to its lenders for several
months;
2. The landlord has not paid the utility bills for both heat and electricity
for several months;
3. The landlord has not paid its real estate taxes for several months;
4. There is not a managing agent in place to manage maintenance issues
on any of the premises and the Campus Habitat office located at 77
Eleventh Street has been closed;
5. The tenants’ security deposits are not in the possession of the lending
banks and their location is unknown to us;
6. Campus Habitat is also involved in a large foreclosure lawsuit around
the campus of Southern Illinois University. Information can be found
at:http://www.wsiltv.com/news/local/Campus-Habitat-In-Foreclosure-
136401633.html; the students affected have not had their security
deposits returned to them.
Lenders in New York who have not received mortgage payments are entitled to begin a lawsuit
against the landlord called a “foreclosure”. That lawsuit, once begun, will affect the rights of
tenants who are residing in the premises.
Utility companies in New York who have not been paid ultimately have the right to shut off the
utilities [affecting both heat and electricity] after giving notice to tenants that such a shut-off is
about to happen.
All tenants have the right to know the current location of their security deposits held by the
landlord.
Students who reside in any of these premises [or their parents] should immediately contact Cary
Dresher, Associate Dean, Off- Campus Commons at Rensselaer either at dreshc@rpi.edu or at
(518) 276- 6284.
Rensselaer is prepared to provide Rensselaer housing or Rensselaer affiliated housing for those
students that need or want such assistance. Dean Dresher will arrange a meeting for all affected
students at a time and place to be determined.
Rensselaer has arranged for an attorney to be available for advice to students and their families
regarding this problem; that consultation can be arranged through Dean Dresher for those who
need it.ADDRESSES AFFECTED THAT WE KNOW ABOUT
