If we take a walk around the city, we see hundreds of things, such as houses, trees, cars and colourful advertisements. The same is seen by other people, but the thoughts that are provoked by the same observation or event may be very different. Moreover, passers-by themselves also influence our perception of the world as we influence theirs. In this way, some people of a certain city are connected to each other because they have met each other at least once. A good example of these links between strangers is the novel Mrs. Dalloway (1950) by Virginia Woolf, which describes a hot summer day of June in 1923. The author uses several techniques in order to join different people and their thoughts into the events of one day.
The same visual images, such as an advertisement, a girl and cars, provoke characters' memory and are responses to their feelings and thoughts. Sound images, such as a song sung by a poor woman and overheard conversations, also influence people differently. These techniques give an opportunity to show inner world of the different characters without introducing them to the reader. Therefore, the novel has a large collection of the people from all walks of life who are connected with each other by the use of visual and sound images. Another important aspect that joins different characters together is time. All events happen in the same day, sometimes even in the same hour. In this way, time also connects characters with each other.
