B. In “The Sniper,” Liam O’Flaherty utilizes irony to craft a gripping story that communicates a powerful message about war.
II. Irony in the sniper’s brother
A. The snipers snipe each other, even though they know that they could know each other.
B. The enemy sniper was the sniper’s brother
1. [Quote: It could be somebody he knew.] Ironic because we were led to believe that if anything it would be an acquaintance of the sniper.
C. The sniper’s brother celebrates when the sniper plays dead
1. Ironic because we know something that the enemy sniper doesn’t (that the sniper is alive).
III. Irony in the sniper’s actions
A. Sniper lights his cigarette even though he knows it is dangerous.
1. Ironic because we expect the sniper to be cautious.
B. Sniper survives being shot and pistol’s his brother to death.
1. Ironic because we would think that the sniper would die after being sniped.
