I. Introduction
A. Attention Material: What comes to mind when you think of Lamborghini? Fast cars, outrageous designs and of course really expensive. But what about gas economy? Fuel economy is one the main reasons why people do not buy sports cars or refrain from driving them. You might think that all sports cars are gas guzzlers, but you’re wrong. Not the latest Lamborghini Aventador.
B. Thesis Statement: Today, I would like to prove to you that the latest Lamborghini is not much of a gas guzzler and how Lamborghini have taken the initiative into making their cars more environmentally friendly.
C. Credibility Material: According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the latest Lamborghini gets 17 miles per gallon. That’s better fuel economy than its predecessor, the Murcielago which only got 11 miles per gallon. It doesn’t sound like much compared to the hybrids of today, but what’s to complain when you can go 210 mph at nearly 20 mpg. Even a mid-sized SUV can’t accomplish that.
II. Body
A. The engine produces 700 horsepower, 30 more than the last generation, but still manages to squeeze out an additional 6 miles to the gallon. Lamborghini achieved this by building an entirely new engine since it originally started out in the 1960s.
B. The Aventador has dynamic parts in the body to help control cooling of the engine and improve aerodynamics at the same time. When the engine is warmed up or when the outside temperature reaches 86 degrees, the air vents on the side of the car will rise to allow more cool natural air into the engine in combination to the engine fans to make the car cool quicker. It also avoids burning fuel quicker.
C. Many overlook weight as a way to save fuel. Fortunately, since Lamborghini is about performance cars, weight was the first thing they wanted to get rid of to improve handling and they did significantly. Since the new Lamborghini weighs only 1575 kg (3472 lbs), there isn’t drag and the engine doesn’t have to work harder. This equals more fuel savings. The Murcielago weighed in at 1650 kg (3638 lbs). Lamborghini themselves said that they focused more on weight savings rather than power output.
III. Conclusion
A. Today, I have discussed and informed you on how Lamborghini has taken the initiative about environmental issues and how they have improved the fuel economy in their latest generation of cars.
