In Snyder, Texas citizens have had several surprises this year in the form of earthquakes. It makes one curious about earthquakes. Even though humans have explored outer space, we have only explored 7.6 miles deep inside our own planet (Hunt) (pg. 39). The Gamburtsev Mountains, buried beneath 2 miles of ice in East Antarctica, are the most puzzling range of mountains caused by earthquakes (Hunt) (pg. 42). Of course, the climate conditions make study there very difficult. There continue to be many mysteries about earthquakes. Since scientists can now study earthquakes using technologies similar to medical CAT scans, however, geophysicist Karin Sigloch predicts, “now we can learn about conditions at the earth’s surface tens of millions of years ago” (Hunt) (pg. 41).
