<WhatMan> Hi, mikepav.
<mikepav> hello
* sickofjesus is now known as soj|atchurch
<WhatMan> Do you know why you were disabled?
<mikepav> no
* lenrek is now known as \lenrek\
<WhatMan> Care to exact a guess?
<mikepav> cantr think of anything
<mikepav> can't*
<mikepav> that i have done warranting a ban from the site
<WhatMan> Alright.
<WhatMan> I don't know you, mikepav.
<WhatMan> None of the staff members know you.
<WhatMan> And you're probably a great guy in real life.
<WhatMan> But what we see of you is the text you choose to represent yourself.
<WhatMan> In forum posts, IRC, and reports.
<WhatMan> This makes online communication, in a way, even more delicate than real life communication.
<WhatMan> We can't use your body language, or knowledge about your personality to add flavour to that which you write - it's interpreted directly, so if you write blunt and crude things, they're interpreted bluntly and crudely.
<WhatMan> But then once this interpretation is done, we treat it like humans, with all the emotions of a human. So we've gone from your complex thoughts, to simple communication, to our complex thoughts, and if you aren't careful with how you present yourself, some information may be lost in transit.
<WhatMan> And if you aren't careful, you can come off appearing like a bit of a jerk.
<mikepav> the thing is, i haven't been much of a community member in monts because pyth3n has taken my privelage to do that away, i still read forums and talk to a few people in an unofficial IRC channel, i report things i see that are inappropriate for the site in all aspects of the community including the forums and torrents that break the rules.
<WhatMan> And this makes what little interaction you do have with the staff that much more important.
<mikepav> if something gets out of hand, i see it as a service to the community to bring it to the attention of people who can remedy the problem
<WhatMan> This is true, and if the site was run by a giant robot, it would work wonderfully.
<mikepav> i have taken a guess at what the final straw might have been
<mikepav> and the way the thread was reported seemed appropriate
<mikepav> it should have been locked, because warnings were given and mod edits were made in response to people cracking jokes in a thread asking for jokes and contradictions.
<mikepav> in the interest of saving people's accounts i felt it should have been locked
<WhatMan> Yes, it is true that there is logic behind your report.
<mikepav> yes
<WhatMan> But you have to realize that it looked like a bit of a personal attack.
<WhatMan> The staff is not perfectly logical, and you wouldn't like the site if they were.
<mikepav> personal against whom?
<WhatMan> Against pyth3n.
<mikepav> it really wasn't
<WhatMan> I'm sure it wasn't, and a robot wouldn't have thought it was. But that doesn't really matter very much, because pyth3n is a human.
<WhatMan> That's why what I was saying about communication is so important.
<mikepav> i have my issues with site moderation, but this is neither the time nor place for me to voice that
<mikepav> i do my best to avoid a lot of communication with staff on this site when it comes to anything that can be interpreted in any way than the face value of the words
<WhatMan> Unfortunately, face value is how robots see things. Humans don't take things at face value, mikepav.
<mikepav> because i know that people are human and have feelings and that anything said can be taken in a lot of ways
<mikepav> it was never meant to be a personal attack
<mikepav> and if my actions have offended anyonw, i am sincerely sorry.
<WhatMan> I'm sure it wasn't. But it looked like one.
<mikepav> i want you to know that, i want pyth3n to know that as well
<WhatMan> When you ask someone if they're having a bad day, they tend to take it personally.
<WhatMan> If they aren't having a bad day, it makes it bad, and if they are, it makes it worse.
<mikepav> fair enough
<mikepav> that comment was inappropriate
<WhatMan> Look, it's all well and good to say "that comment was inappropriate", but how many times have you made inappropriate comments and been forgiven in the past?
<mikepav> forgiven? once i think
<WhatMan> So why did it happen again?
<mikepav> time
<mikepav> or wait
<mikepav> why did i make an iappropriate comment
<mikepav> a mental lapse
<mikepav> forgetting how sensitive people can be and that my words can be taken in a lot of different ways, not how i mean them to be

<mikepav> WhatMan: are we finished
<mikepav> ?
<mikepav> i feel like our conversation has no closure
<WhatMan> We were discussing it as a staff.
<WhatMan> There is a split opinion.
<mikepav> understandable
<WhatMan> Many staff members feel that you've had enough chances.
<WhatMan> Others are more forgiving, and feel that you should be allowed to have your account back, but be banned from IRC and be told to never come in contact with the staff or community again.
<mikepav> that seems almost impossible
<WhatMan> How so?
<mikepav> if that is any sort of stipulation on my account, i would rather just not worry about the site or my account, it is counterproductive, i use what.cd for more than just torrenting music
<mikepav> i just hope it doesn't come to that
<mikepav> i like the community
<mikepav> i want to interact with it
<mikepav> not interacting with the community takes a lot of what makes what.cd so great
<mikepav> away from me
<mikepav> i like IRC and the one channel i do frequent
<mikepav> not interacting with staff
<mikepav> in torrent reports is counterproductive
<mikepav> being asked to not try to improve the site in any way at all isn't why i want to keep my account
<mikepav> i have other sources for music, i want to be a part of the community
<WhatMan> But are you able to be a part of the community without being a jerk?
<mikepav> i say yes because i don't see myself as a jerk, however i can't speak for the way others will interpret my words
<WhatMan> Well, you've put us in quite a hard place.
<WhatMan> To be perfectly honest, and I know this might come off as a bit harsh, but the staff would rather that the community be without your contributions.
<mikepav> that is understandable
<WhatMan> If you feel that your account is only worth it for the community involvement, then it's completely out of line with the desires of the staff.
<WhatMan> Who are meant to represent the community itself.
<mikepav> only isn't the right word for the situation
<WhatMan> The staff are already putting themselves at enough of a compromise position by allowing your account to continue to exist. Are you not willing to compromise yourself?
<mikepav> i am willing to comprimise
<mikepav> i just wanted to express my own opinion on the matter
<mikepav> and clarify exactly what you mean by "told to never come in contact with the staff or community again"
<WhatMan> No forums, no wiki, no comments, no IRC, no reports.
<mikepav> does this include using the reports system to report torrents breaking rules, or creating requests for albums not on the site
<WhatMan> Requests, you will still be allowed to create.
<WhatMan> Torrent reports should be okay as well.
<WhatMan> No forum reports though, please.
<mikepav> fair enough
<mikepav> that one i made, in hindsight, was in poor taste

<mikepav> understood
<WhatMan> You can log in again. In a couple minutes, I will gline you from the network.
<WhatMan> You are expected to not return, even when the gline expires. Is this clear?
<mikepav> yes
<WhatMan> Alright.
<mikepav> thanks for your understanding
