what is war driving?
Wardriving is the act of searching for Wi-Fi wireless networks by a person in a moving vehicle, using a portable computer or PDA. this used to be quite complex and would need a laptop, a gps reciever, car charge, a friend to drive. This has now been simplyfied as there is an app for that if you a have n android phone.
So your now asking why bother. Well imagine if you had a map with all the wifi points in your town, closed or open. Next time your in town and your mobile signal drops but you HAVE to send that tweet/facebook update/e-mail, you can consult the map and voila connect to an open wifi and reconnect with the digital world
Please note, do not put your selves or others in danger by wardriving. please observe all local laws.
How to Wardrive.
Wardriving is now really REALLY simple.
1. Download the Wardriving app to your device (https://market.android.com/details?id=ki.wardrive&feature=search_result)
2. Ensure both the wifi and gps are enabled in settings
3. Start the app.
4. Give it a bit of time to locate you
5. Drive!
I recommend only wardriving with a car charger as this totally nails your battery.
your device will now log all the wifi points you pass with a geo tag. This is can then be uploaded to google maps/earth as a KML file, for perusal off line in.
please note that it doesnt store the wifi points within the google maps on your device.
