You honestly think DJs are recognized in PG on the basis of talent? For that matter, what comprises talent, especially in the DJ world, where we're just playing others' music? As DJing is mechanically and technically quite simple, how can people differentiate themselves? I played my first proper party here in '07. I got that gig due to friendship with the promoter. I threw my first party in '02, along with a huge group of friends. We lost so much money that event that it completely reshaped the interpersonal relationships in that circle of friends.
DJing is a high-profile artistic endeavour. The people who have some degree of success here in town have invested huge amounts of time and/or money. It's a resource sink, and the returns are small. The only thing that keeps any of us going is the love of it. Some people here get some vague semblance of recognition. My friend Tommy, for example, has been DJing pretty much since I started partying, which is almost 11 years now.
There is no formula for success. Success rests on the shoulders of every individual. The only constant seems to be massive amounts of time and/or money thrown into music, but lots of people do that just for the love of it, and not even to progress some quixotic notion of Prince George fame. The only source of such "fame" comes from the people dropping loads of time and money into the scene. In comparison, to be completely frank, both of us are still very young.
