Ballroom dance is a collection of partner dances that can also refer to recreational social dancing. Today’s ballroom dancing is classified under four major categories: International Standard, International Latin, American Smooth, and American Rhythm.
* The current International Standard originated in England
* International Standard dancing consists of Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep
* International Latin dancing consists of Samba, Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive
* Entymology: Latin ballare (to dance)
* Ballroom dancing was described as early as 1588 in Jean Tabourot’s Orchêsographie
* King Louis XIV founded the Académie Royale de Musique et de Danse to standardize dance positions and executions
* Modern waltz dance was greatly influenced by the 1930s Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers choreographed social dancing
* Today ballroom dancing is performed both in social and competitive aspects

Tango originated in Argentina and was exported to Britain in 1912 in the successful musical comedyThe Sunshine Girl and to the United States in 1921 in silent movie The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
* Each form of Tango evolved seperately, with the British form becoming part of International Standard dance and the American variant becoming part of American Smooth dance
