Here, we come to a crossroads—where the idea of constructive complexity clashes with the superiority of seeking simplicity. Thoreau’s urge for us to “simplify, simplify, simplify” (1) combined with the formidable strength of a computer that transcends precedent to view chess at its bare minimum, and in the process, excel, are compelling arguments that perhaps, complexity isn’t where one should look to for great success.
