But he will do so with a qualification. He doesn't actually care if God is real or not, for He either is or isn't. If He is, well and good, but even if He isn't, the message of the Bible is in no way undermined in importance or effectiveness.
The Bible states that God is real, but does not depend on that axiom for its words to carry their symbolic truth - it merely gives them the impetus to make them believable. It would not alter the dogma of the Catholic faith one iota even if empirical evidence was produced disproving the existence of God. If anything, it would improve it - it would eliminate cause for fundamentalism, and allow people to simply carry out a proven way of life that has made countless thousands happy, successful individuals united under one faith, and impressed, like other religions, concepts such as charity and mercy on its followers, concepts which have no real natural evolutionary basis and are really little more than fabrications of reason than anything real. But, like faith, they are as real as we make them, and real or not, I choose to make real my God.
