<paulproteus> Whoa, big pile of ops.
<polvi> hooolllla
* poningru waves at justdave too for good measure
<polvi> ops == people who work a the OSL
<paulproteus> Wow, that's some solid presence.
<polvi> or alum, i gues
<polvi> ha
* skyfaller (n=skyfalle@wikipedia/Skyfaller) has joined #osuosl
<paulproteus> skyfaller, psst, ask them! (-:
<poningru> paulproteus: I think you better ask dude
<poningru> skyfaller may have joined rejon for lunch
<poningru> ;)
* marineam is confused
<paulproteus> So skyfaller, poningru, and skyfaller are with freeculture.org.
<paulproteus> We're an international student group to promote Free Software and Free Culture ideals.
<paulproteus> Alas, our current web host is in a huge mess and has broken our website for past four days.
<paulproteus> We primarily operate by independent chapters at schools; that keeps top-level administrivia low and local activism high.
<paulproteus> http://uf.freeculture.org/ is one example of a thriving chapter.
<cshields> yeah, I need to respond to your email
<cshields> unfortunately, it doesn't sound like we are the best place for you.. especially in terms of the DMCA ordeal
<paulproteus> Basically, we wanted to know if, if we applied for hosting from you guys and we got sent a take-down notice by some alleged (C) holder, if you would immediately shut our service or instead talk to us first.
<cshields> being that this is a university, we deal almost daily with DMCA CnD's and have to respond to them quickly.. sounds similar to what you guys just ran into
<paulproteus> By "we" I actually mean skyfaller.  Don't tell him, but this isn't as important to me as it is to him. (-;
<poningru> err tack me on to that
<poningru> it would be important imho
<cshields> Sounds like you guys need something out at Sealand
<paulproteus> I don't think we do things so far outside the mainstream often enough that this will be a problem, and if we do it so much that it is a problem nowhere in the US would host us anyway, which is why I'm not so interested in it.
<cshields> there is also the open source aspect.. We typically reserve our resources for open source code development and collaboration.
<paulproteus> Right, that's a good point, what with the name and all. (-:
<cshields> and you guys have to admit, requesting hosting on the grounds of trying to find a place that will help safeguard you against DMCA issues is not a good introduction..
<paulproteus> I think if freeculture.org were up you'd see we are strongly about building, using, and promoting FLOSS, and I think that a movement toward broader use of open source and Free software has a lot in common with the quest for reusability of other cultural items.
<cshields> sure.  I think it's a great idea..
<paulproteus> cshields, Yeah, I see what you mean about the approach. (-:
<cshields> but if I see it as a liability, I don't want to jeopardize the likes of Mozilla, OpenOffice.org, Linux kernel.org, and dozens of other projects if things turn into a legal hassle..
<paulproteus> Of course!
<cshields> have you looked into Sealand?
<paulproteus> First of all we understand it's very expensive, and secondly I think there was a fire that made the place less useful.
<paulproteus> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealand#Sealand_fire for the fire, fwiw.

<rejon> hello all
<rejon> thx first hosting inkscape on your infrastructure
<rejon> I'm working with the freeculture.org project and am hoping that you all would agree to provide hosting for them on osuosl infra...
<rejon> I can provide more details if questions
<rejon> the current site is at: http://freeculture.org
<rejon> the current site is offline because of bad hosting
<cshields> rejon: I need more information on 1) what this contributes to the Open Source Community, and 2) how this is not a liability to the rest of the hosting we do here, because the initial message definitely makes it seem that way. And we would have a similar reaction to a DMCA request as you guys had previously :(
<cshields> right now we are at our financial limits, so justifying yet another project without additional funding would mean a very exceptional answer to #1, and no liability with #2..
<cshields> but with that, I am out most of the day trying to raise more funds for the lab, so it might be best to work through the email already received
