@Juan:
We've enhanced our graphics engine to support a bunch of new technical features such as self shadowing, enhanced terrain generation and smoother lip synch and more face customization. It's not a complete overhaul, but the end result looks better and runs smoother.

Fernando@BIoWare:
[Epy] - Speaking of the social site, will we be able to "upload" our Hawke profile on th[...]e Bioware social network, just like we can do with our Gray Warden?

...that's the intention yes - a bit early still to confirm all the online features for DA2 however
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:15 Fernando@BIoWare
12:15

Mike Laidlaw:
@StefanJohnson: You were asking about the combat system, I can field that one: The combat in DA2 is very much like origins. You can pause and play, issue orders and so on, just like you could before. Where it's different, though, is that when you issue an order, or fire off an ability, your character charges forward into battle and near-immediately enters the fight. No more shuffling forward into position.

Fernando@BIoWare:
[Pedro Costa] - Hi there Fernando, I guess my first question is how important will our decisions[...] in Origins affect the world in DA2? Will they be nothing more than messages and small bones akin to ME2?

Depends on the decision and its relevance to DA2 - some choices in Origins (or Awakening) are more integral to what is happening in DA2, others are mere rumours of things that may be happening far away in ferelden - and are reflected in that way

Have there been any changes made to the tactics system?

We're doing lots of work to improve the default tactics setups for your party, so that will be nice for players who didn';t use tactics that much. For those of you who did, though, we're going to make some additional slots and conditions available. More details on that to come.

So are the rumors of a Morrigan DLC in September true? Will the Warden ever get a chance to deal with the consequences of the Dark Ritual?
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:18 Brockololly
12:19

Fernando@BIoWare:
@Brockololly: Rumours are rumours of course. But Morrigan is obviously an important character in the DA world, and i'm sure it is not the last we've seen of her.

[PC version ]I know you've stated that we won't be able to zoom-out as much as i[...]n DAO, but is there anything you can say about the tactical view of DA2 at this point?

We've been showing off the tactical camera here at gamescom, and people have been happy with it. It gives a very nice mix of seeing the exact situation on the battlefield while still letting you issue orders, place your fireballs and such. Essentially, it detaches the camera from your character, letting you move it around and adjust the angle. Also, you can get some really neat screenshots!
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:20 Mike Laidlaw
12:21

Fernando@BIoWare:
@Amonithil: Its unlikely for launch, sorry :( But we are looking at it - and more correctly it remains the same toolset, but with modifications/updates and some additional new tech

Mike Laidlaw:
12:20 [Fred]
Will classes in DA2 feel like they did in Origins or did BW make a lot of change[...]s when it comes to skills etc.?
-------------------
There are some changes, yes, but they're all designed to make the classes feel more distinct. I'm really happy with how rogues are shaping up, they feel quite different from warriors now.
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:24 Mike Laidlaw
12:24

Fernando@BIoWare:
[Chris] - Hi there, will we be able to play through the main story as dwarfs or elves or o[...]ther things, or do we all have to be this "hawke" guy?

DA2 is about Hawke's story - Hawke can be male or female, and you have full customization of look as you did in Origins. But for the same reason you wouldn't be a elf in a dwarf origin story in Origins, it is just as important that Hawke be human as far as the impact to the world
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:24 Fernando@BIoWare
12:26

Fernando@BIoWare:
noarev] - What are you most excited about with the development of DA2?

Existing tools/engine/pipeline etc means we can make super fast progress - we can see game content straight away.

12:26

Mike Laidlaw:
12:23 [gotthammer]
will DA2 require more in terms of system requirements? also, will it be like ME2[...] in that it will feel 'more optimized' (i.e., ME2 runs smoother on my system than ME1)?
----------------------------------------

The redesign of the visual style has an added benefit of running much smoother on our engine. We can get a lot more creatures on screen, with better framerates.

12:28

Mike Laidlaw:
12:24 [Alex W]
I undersand that DA2 will now feature a dialogue wheel akin to mass effect. How [...]similar to Mass effects wheel is this?
---------------------------------------------
It's functionally similar to Mass effect, but we've added the emotional icons into the wheel. If you're going to bribe, attack, flirt, be sarcastic and so on, an icon will help indicate that, so you never feel like Hawke is acting in a way you don't intend.
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:28 Mike Laidlaw

Fernando@BIoWare:
[Jonathon ODonnell] - [PC version ]I know you've stated that we won't be able to zoom-out as much as i[...]n DAO, but is there anything you can say about the tactical view of DA2 at this point?

We're showing off a current prototype of TactCamera 2.0 behind closed doors if that helps ;) But at this point (and until we actually lock it down) no, sorry. The fundamental though is that you can still pause and have ability to see whats happening everywhere on the battlefield and issue your commands.
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:28 Fernando@BIoWare
12:29

Fernando@BIoWare:
[Chris] - Will we be able to import our grey warden from origin or are we stuck with hawke?

Hawke's story - but you can import your save from origins. This will bring in your choices (and consequences) into the world.

12:30

Mike Laidlaw:
12:25 [Youaremee]
Will Hawke now be the main protaganist throughout the series like Shepherd?
---------------------------------------------
Nope! While hawke may have a continuing role in the series, I have always viewed Dragon Age as a series of games about the world, rather than about individual characters. Not to say Hawke isn't important, he is, but the world is really our focus.

Many PC players who played the demo stated that you have to click for each attac[...]k like a Diablo II clone :). Is it true? Or just a misunderstanding?
---------------------------------------
While they certainly can click repeatedly, it's not necessary. You can simply right click on a target and your character will continue to attack on the PC until that target is dead, or cannot be reached anymore.
Saturday August 21, 2010 12:31 Mike Laidlaw
12:31

Fernando@BIoWare:
[Juan Diez] - Good to hear the DA 2 engine is improving. Probably is a bit early to ask but wi[...]ll the PC System Requirements grow much compared to DAO? Some we would like to have a hint if we would need to save for a new PC or a PC upgrade to be ready to play in March :-)

We're looking at supporting higher end cards/dx11, but low end should hopefully be similar - so in short, if you can play DAO you should be able to play DA2. But until all optimizations are in its hard to confirm - that's the intent though

Fernando@BIoWare:
[federico.valeri75] - Many PC players who played the demo stated that you have to click for each attac[...]k like a Diablo II clone :). Is it true? Or just a misunderstanding?

Misunderstanding - and more a reflection that combat is more responsive and can do this. But it works similar to Origins - if you click a target you'll keep attacking them until dead or give a different comand

Mike Laidlaw:

Does focusing on one origin story (Hawke's) improve the quality of the narrative?
------------------------------------------
I think it can, yes. While the origin stories were very cool, for Dragon Age II, we're putting a lot of effort into the middle of the game. While covering a decade of history, you can see the effects of your choices play out in the game, rather than in the epilogue, so it's let us really focus our development efforts on that feeling of reactivity.

How have the combat animations improved, I always felt that the combat animation[...]s and the way characters swung swords were really unrealistic. Have you guys ever thought about doing Motion capture combat animation?

12:38

Fernando@BIoWare:
@Chris: If the choices impacted the world or added to the world fiction - then it may end up being reflected at some point. But most of these are self-contained - they added more set background info rather than made you take a choice of some kind

Hey guys, will specialization classes work the same way as in origins (with a gr[...]oup of skills plus little bonuses to stats) or will there be significant changes to the way they worked?
-------------------------------------------------------
It will be similar, though like all of our talent/spell trees, you will have a branching tree, rather than just a linear chain of abilities, and you will be able to upgrade some of the abilities to make them stronger, if you choose to do so. That's more of a universal change, though.

Read that the AI is improved this time around and some have said the AI may now [...]be too good. Will we still have control over our companions in combat or will the AI do it all for us?
-----------------------------------
It will function like origins, so the allies will attack in smart ways, unless you change their tactics. At the beginning of the game, the enemies aren't that tough, so it's possible people worried the AI is too good are just reacting to that. Regardless, I'd rather have an AI that's too good than too bad.

How is BioWare able to make this game in such a short period of time when it too[...]k 8 years to make Origins?
------------------------------------------------
Dragon Age Origins required us to build up the lore for the world, as well as build the engine for the game from scratch. That took a significant amount of time. For DA2, both of those are complete, so we were able to hit the ground running and start the design for DA2 before we had even shipped Origins.

DA2 begins at the events of Lothering (the village where you meet sten & leliana in origins that burns), and then goes 10 years after. There are grey wardens in the world and you will meet some in DA2.

--------------------------------------
Varric knows, or has heard, pretty much the whole story around Hawke's rise to power.

So, for "companion specific" actions -- a bit like choosing people for the prison break in Origins?

Fernando@BIoWare:
@Fran: Not quite - not taking over party members, but ask them to answer the line or take an action as part of the conversation.

When you say "Hawke's rise to power", do you mean power in combat or does he have political influence of some sort?

Will there be new spell combos?
-----------------------------

Better: there will be cross-class combos. You'll be able to make your rogues, warriors and mages team up to dish out some serious hurt. I loved spell combos and think it's only fair. So, for example, you could sunder someone's armor as a warrior, and then a rogue could take advantage of that to sink a blade into the target, doing massive damage.

How many allies can join you in battle?

Like Origins, you can take a party of four characters (Hawke + 3 more) into combat

I'm a rogue fan. Mages and warriors are pretty cool, but there's something about being the lithe dexterity fighter that always appeals.
