Intalling RAM chips

Installing RAM is a very simple process. The most important step in installing RAM is making sure that you buy the correct type of RAM for your motherboard. The motherboard's manual will specify what type of RAM you can use with it.

The first step in installing your RAM is prepping the board. Most RAM slots have small tabs on the side. Make sure these tabs are pushed away from the slot. Take a can of compressed air and in short bursts, blow out the slot.

The next step is to remove the stick of RAM from the package. Be very careful with it, and only handle it be the short edges. Check the stick for obvious defects like cracks or weird markings. Don't kill yourself, though, because if you do find a defect, there's very little chance of you fixing.

Finally, you're going to put the stick into the motherboard. The stick will probably have a small notch somewhere near the middle of the chip. Line this notch up with the little nub of plastic inside the slot. When the notch is lined up properly, GENTLY press down on the top of the stick. You should feel a click as the tabs pop into place. Make sure that the stick went in evenly, and that both tabs are securely locked into the sides of the stick.

If you followed the steps carefully, and didn't damage or receive a damaged stick of RAM, you should now have a nice chunk of RAM for your apps to hog.
