Problem
You have a phone that monitors extensions and you want to deploy hinting
Solution
To add hinting to your phones edit your Dialplan to include:
exten => 100,hint,sip/100
for each extension on your system.
Discussion
Hinting is used in Asterisk to manage the location of extensions throughout the various methods of connecting to asterisk. Hints should always be added to the dialplan after the extension is entered.
exten => 100,1,Dial(sip/100)
exten => 100,hint,sip/100
The example in this recipe uses a SIP extension of 100. Hints can be used for SIP, IAX2, or Zapata connections; or parking slots (As of Asterisk 2.4). By substituting sip in the example above for the appropriate media, you can adjust the hint to use your device.

This example will allow monitoring of an iax2 media device.
