The word 'brook' meaning a stream.
Has it ever, ever in the history of any language that any of you know of been spelled 'brooke'?
I can't find reference to that form being an 'archaic spelling' ANYWHERE on the internet, and it'd greatly ease my mind to know that someone is just trying not to fess up to their typo. =)
Of course, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, I'd just like to know either way.

re: Archaic, schmarchaic Sun Oct 18 Jonathan Crane

I can't cite a clear reference, but english has historically been a language subject to incredible changes and mutations, particularly when compared to other languages. Before the pioneering work of Noah Webster, it should be noted that there was /no/ established, proper way to spell any word, and people used the phoenetic Roman letters as each individual writer saw fit. A lot of the spellings that we consider archaic come from this period, but it's important to remember that there were no formal established rules in this period for spelling, and customs varied greatly from location to location. Regional dialects further confused the matter. "Brooke" was probably used somewhere, but saying that it was ever the "correct" way to spell the word would be inaccurate.

Brooking no argument. Sun Oct 18 Ji

Thank you to everyone who responded, the resounding affirmation that at no time was brook spelled brooke in any official capacity is a gold strike in my Tally of People Spelling Things Wrong Around Me book.
Unfortunately the creator of this typo and subsequent ruling that 'Folks, brooke is not a typo. It is an archaic spelling.' has decided to not even accept a Typo Report about it, one of those 'it's my desc I'll do it how I like' deals.
Horrid!

Really, are we going to start correcting everyone's descs now? Fixing the spelling and grammar mistakes of tens of thousands of characters while trying to preserve (or worse, imagine or understand *shudder*) their original intent is something I should get overtime and hazard pay for. Nevermind the boardspam. No, leave the typos and grammar. Uncorrected, it serves as at least some indicator of the quality of the author, and knowing in advance who sucks is more useful than correcting their descs.

Brooke Sun Oct 18 Nikos
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually, I've seen it used as "Brooke". Much like Jonathan Crane mentioned above. Before Webster the rules weren't really set, but it was used. As far as archaic spellings go, brooke is a fairly easy one to accept. If you've ever had to read or study any pre-1600 ledgers, town histories, etc. you can see lots of things that follow the same pattern of phonetic spelling. I can't list any examples off the top of my head right now, but I know I've seen it. Old English is very much a language all on its own that depends very heavily on creative interpretation. So just because it doesn't appear in a dictionary doesn't mean it's wrong.

I'm afraid you have to go through the 3-month Pedantry Academy and get your Grammar Nazi certifications before you can expect people to change their entire descriptions over a single letter at your whims.

This had nothing to do with any character description at all. It was a question regarding an argument over the spelling of the word brook. As much as I love to hear feedback from anyone when I post here, as I'm sure we all do, please don't use my question and then ending statement as a platform with which to grandstand the old 'Description Grammar Nazi' bit, it was completely unrelated.

Theirs mistake that was easy enough to make without a lot of information but some rhetoric about people descing how they want to. The general sentiment stands. But really, how can you use the word "grandstand" to describe the actions of anybody but yourself after that narcissistic display?

I think it's crap, really. The guy asked for a simple yes/no/where on a possible spelling of a word, and suddenly people start jumping down his throat about being a spelling/grammer nazi/whatever. If you have an answer to his question, great, post it. If you don't have anything constructive to add, stay the hell out of it and stop trolling.

The Oxford English dictionary's entry for 'brook' includes a number of past spellings, including 'broc', 'bruke', 'brok', and 'brooke'. Just as an FYI.

Thank you, Malina. That's what anyone else should have posted instead of all this long-winded accusations about who is trying to justify what. On a sidee (but related, I assure you) note, I can't STAND people who page me to jump all over me about some bulls**t, then put me on ignore so I can't even answer. Grow up.

In the interest of not fanning the flames of a fire I truly never meant to start, first: Thank you Malina, I don't have access currently to an Oxford Dictionary, and I'm not paying for the one online, but if it's in there, then I was wrong, and that's fine too. :)
And to Trav, if Katasha was an alt of mine, this would be a friendly reminder that alt outing is a disgraceful practice, shame on you. But she's not, so it isn't. :)
Anything that comes after this is out of my hands, or my realm of concern. My apologies, all. Ta!
