Test procedures

using nsupdate

$nsupdate
>server 127.0.0.1
>zone mike.local
>update add new.mike.local 600 A 1.2.3.4

in the precceding example, the 600 is the TTL 

Pitfalls

If there is a permissions error with an unknown file, nsupdate will return servfail
If you have forgotten to configure allow-update, nsupdate will return refused
