i use debian sid with kernel 2.6.17.
my problem is that i cannot enable 3d acceleration after installing the latest ati driver. in order to install the driver i did the follow:
#sudo apt-get install module-assistant build-essential fakeroot dh-make debconf
#sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.24.8-i386.run --buildpkg Debian/sid
#sudo dpkg -i fglrx-control-qt3_8.27.10-1_i386.deb
#sudo dpkg -i fglrx-kernel-src_8.27.10-1_i386.deb
#sudo dpkg -i fglrx-driver-dev_8.27.10-1_i386.deb
#sudo apt-get -f upgrade
#sudo module-assistant prepare
#sudo module-assistant update
#sudo module-assistant a-i fglrx
and i changed my xorg.conf file.....
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
