it appears that the unknown option -pthreads problem goes away aswell after i add the correct dir to the path. the -fno-stack-protector problem seems to be unique to the grub package
after uninstalling cygwins gcc-3.3.3...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ gcc -v
-bash: gcc: command not found
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as expected
ok, first i boot up my computer (ssh into my cygwin box) and launch distccd
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ distccd
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/system32:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/System32/Wbem:/usr/bin:/bin
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as expected, since i have not added it to the path i get the file not found i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc, but emerge gkrellm says something else:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
emerge grub
(on gentoo box)
distccd[292] (dcc_execvp) ERROR: failed to exec i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc: No such file or directory
distcc[8082] ERROR: compile bios.c on 10.0.0.125 failed with exit code 110
----------------------------------------------------
emerge gkrellm
(on gentoo box)
distccd[1592] (dcc_execvp) ERROR: failed to exec cc: No such file or directory
distcc[22751] ERROR: compile alerts.c on 10.0.0.125 failed with exit code 110
make[1]: *** [alerts.o] Error 110
---------------------------------------------------
if i remember correctly cc is the process that launches on the DSITCC Server when its working. i dont have a file called cc or cc1 anywhere on my cygwin box, but what do i know, maybe it will work anyway
so i add the correct dir to the path
-------------------------------------------------------
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ PATH=/opt/crosstool/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-3.3.5-glibc-2.3.2/bin/:$PATH
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ echo $PATH
/opt/crosstool/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-3.3.5-glibc-2.3.2/bin/:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/system32:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/System32/Wbem:/usr/bin:/bin
-------------------------------------------------------
and rerun distccd to make sure it takes to the new path
so far so good, now i try the emerge again on the gentoo box
--------------------------
emerge grub (on gentoo box)
"; else rm -f ".deps/pre_stage2_exec-char_io.Tpo"; exit 1; fi
cc1: error: unrecognized option `-fno-stack-protector'
distcc[14971] ERROR: compile bios.c on 10.0.0.125 failed

you said that requires a patch so im not worried so much about that, but...
----------------------------------
emerge gkrellm says the same thing!
distccd[1592] (dcc_execvp) ERROR: failed to exec cc: No such file or directory
distcc[22751] ERROR: compile alerts.c on 10.0.0.125 failed with exit code 110
-------------------------------------------
hmmm, now i dont know what to do so i just start adding things to my path. first i add the dir with the gcc.exe file
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ PATH=/opt/crosstool/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-3.3.5-glibc-2.3.2/i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/:$PATH
cygusr@dindoze ~
$ gcc -v

nonetheless, same error when emerging gkrellm (cant find cc). both compiles fail very quickly. so i try one more package (links2) to see what will happen: SUCCESS! it compiled w/o failing, and was distributed.
so then i try the other two compiles w/o distcc, thinking maybe they would fail anyway, but they dont. this scares me because what if, even though some compiles will work, they will exhibit wierd behavior when compiled. something is obviously wrong and i dont know what it is.
