(21:30:17) unexpectedhaxorz: hey
(21:30:31) Sapient2003: Do I know you?
(21:30:31) unexpectedhaxorz logged in.
(21:30:53) unexpectedhaxorz: oh, sorry
(21:30:58) unexpectedhaxorz: forgive me for not introducing myself
(21:31:02) unexpectedhaxorz: <- kiafaldorius
(21:31:17) Sapient2003: What have you been up to?
(21:31:41) unexpectedhaxorz: well, the last few days i've been struggling to get gentoo installed
(21:31:50) unexpectedhaxorz: everything works fine now
(21:32:00) unexpectedhaxorz: only prob is...network doesn't go on
(21:32:14) unexpectedhaxorz: and i didn't compile DCHP into the kernel -.-
(21:32:27) Sapient2003: Did you edit /etc/confid.d/net correctly?
(21:32:59) Sapient2003: TweakNet sapient # cat /etc/conf.d/net
config_eth0=("192.168.1.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 brd 192.168.1")
routes_eth0=("default gw 192.168.1.1")
(21:33:15) unexpectedhaxorz: that i think is my problem..
(21:33:31) unexpectedhaxorz: was hoping you could help
(21:34:47) Sapient2003: Edit that file and then type: /etc/init.d/net.eth0
(21:35:00) Sapient2003: Rather: /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
(21:35:02) unexpectedhaxorz: config_eth0=( "192.168.1.65 netmask 255.255.0.0 broadcast 192.168.0.1" )
routes_eth0=( "default via 192.168.0.1" )
(21:35:17) unexpectedhaxorz: thats mine..
(21:35:47) Sapient2003: lmfao
(21:35:55) Sapient2003: I see an error already.
(21:36:07) unexpectedhaxorz: the via instead of gw?
(21:36:26) Sapient2003: Your broadcast IP address needs to use the same subnet as your LAN IP address and gateway.
(21:37:23) Sapient2003: Is 192.168.0.1 your actual gateway IP address?
(21:37:30) unexpectedhaxorz: yup
(21:37:57) unexpectedhaxorz: so the broadcast is 255?
(21:38:09) Sapient2003: Then fix your LAN IP address and broadcast address.
(21:38:29) Sapient2003: config_eth0=( "192.168.0.65 netmask 255.255.0.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255" )
routes_eth0=( "default via 192.168.0.1" )
(21:39:38) unexpectedhaxorz: hmm
(21:39:46) unexpectedhaxorz: alright, thanks
(21:40:04) Sapient2003: Then, after you fix that, type: rc-update add net.eth0 default
(21:40:04) unexpectedhaxorz: i'll get back on in half an hour or less if it works =]
(21:40:23) unexpectedhaxorz: that part is already done
(21:40:27) Sapient2003: That will ensure that your ethernet device will be active when you reboot and such.
(21:40:46) unexpectedhaxorz: kkz

(22:48:52) unexpectedhaxorz: whee!!!
(22:48:56) unexpectedhaxorz: THANKS SO MUCH
(22:49:01) unexpectedhaxorz: it works =]
(22:49:17) Sapient2003: No problem.
(22:49:26) Sapient2003: Easy fix, eh?
(22:51:58) unexpectedhaxorz: yup
(22:52:02) unexpectedhaxorz: heh
(22:52:15) unexpectedhaxorz: so...what have YOU been up to?
(22:52:55) Sapient2003: Hanging with friends, dealing with my new Gentoo installation, watching movies, etc...
(22:56:12) Sapient2003: Which filesystems are you using anyhow?
(22:57:23) unexpectedhaxorz: ext3
(22:57:45) Sapient2003: For your root and boot partitions?
(22:58:25) Sapient2003: I myself prefer using EXT3 for my boot partition and reiserfs for my root partition.
(22:58:54) unexpectedhaxorz: my root is ext3 and my boot is ext2
(22:59:09) unexpectedhaxorz: i want to try reiserfs one of these days actually
(22:59:13) unexpectedhaxorz: is it any good?
(22:59:42) Sapient2003: It is much faster than EXT3 when dealing with files less than 4k in size.
(23:00:14) unexpectedhaxorz: how often do you work with files less than 4k?
(23:00:52) Sapient2003: Most files are less than that, actually. Even with larger files it is still extremely fast.
(23:05:09) unexpectedhaxorz: hmm..
(23:11:42) Sapient2003: So, do you have KDE and such installed on your Gentoo box yet?
(23:12:02) unexpectedhaxorz: i got xfce
(23:12:24) Sapient2003: ewww
(23:12:36) Sapient2003: KDE is the one and only truly complete window manager.
(23:12:41) unexpectedhaxorz: im trying to figure out why its running on 800x600 when my monitor could go 1024x768
(23:12:44) Sapient2003: All others are hardly even in their infancy.
(23:12:55) Sapient2003: You need to edit xorg.conf.
(23:13:07) unexpectedhaxorz: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8030258561381018356&q=xfce4
(23:13:13) unexpectedhaxorz: call that infancy!
(23:13:16) unexpectedhaxorz: i call that cool
(23:13:55) Sapient2003: lmfao. KDE can act as a cube as well for the virtual desktops.
(23:14:02) Sapient2003: There really is no need though.
(23:14:08) Sapient2003: A waste of useful resources.
(23:14:33) unexpectedhaxorz: but can it do the moving window thingy
(23:15:21) Sapient2003: As-is, not sure, but I do not care about useless eyecandy.
(23:15:31) unexpectedhaxorz: heh
(23:15:44) unexpectedhaxorz: thats the reason i decided to finally go into linux permanently!!
