13:39 < tzanger> I FUCKING ROCK THE HOUSE
13:39 < tzanger> PH33R ME
13:40 < tzanger> I bought eight, yes eight IEEE1394 drive bays... it wasn't until I THREW OUT the packaging that I
discovered that they all had the exact same GUID... royally piss me off
13:41 < tzanger> To make matters worse the bays supported flash upgrades... or at least they claimed they did... I
could download the firmware but I couldn't send modified firmware back up, the write enable line was
                 not connected
13:43 < tzanger> so I pulled the PLCC off of the board but I tore traces off
13:43 < tzanger> so I destroyed one, but I might be able to get it working agian
13:43 < tzanger> I bought a proper desoldering tool for the part, $80
13:43 < tzanger> and it came in earlier this week
13:43 < tzanger> so I pulled a few more PLCCs off, reprogrammed them with a new GUID (unique) and soldered them back on
13:43 < tzanger> I now see two drives!
13:43 < tzanger> so I brought the rest in to edit
13:44 < tzanger> I'm using an Intel eepro100 card to reflash them since I don't have the proper PLCC socket for my
                 programmer :-)
13:47 < tzanger> so yeah
13:47 < tzanger> $400 for 8 Firewiere drive bays
13:47 < tzanger> $80 for a damn 28PLCC desoldering tool
13:47 < tzanger> a spare intel network card I had
13:47 < tzanger> 6 weeks of waiting for the desoldering tip
13:48 < tzanger> about 2 days of searching for the damn FBOOT.EXE utility that Intel removed from their site
13:48 < tzanger> and about a week of digging around, pissing around, trying to reverse engineer the USB flash
procdure, probing hte firewire bay to realize it didn't actually do anything with WE/, trying to
forcibly make it reflash by grounding WE/ manually...
13:49 < tzanger> some vim magic to hexedit the Flash image and give each one a unique ID
13:49 < tzanger> and probably 2-3hrs to desolder, flash, resolder and check 8 bays
13:49 < tzanger> oh and another $50 to replace the one bay I completely destroyed :-)
13:50 < tzanger> it was an expensive lesson
13:51 < tzanger> and
13:51 < tzanger> for all the trouble I went to, I'm gonna clean up the one bay and return it saying it was bad
13:51 < tzanger> stupid ass chinese vendors not adhereing to the IEEE1394 spec
13:51 < tzanger> I wish I could reach out and bitchslap the person who decided that was a good idea WITHOUT menitoning
                 it on the box
