10:58:15 < Obi-Wan> So you think squishing is better than for example, how MS Excel handles things
10:59:02 <@[Not]Silver> I think in the case of a *chat client*, if you need more than fit on screen without /either/ you are beyond help.
10:59:35 <@[Not]Silver> Squashing them provides enough ease of use at selecting tabs.
11:00:00 <@[Not]Silver> (a spreadsheet program is completely different in use to a chat client)
11:01:48 <@[Not]Silver> Neither squashing or scrolling are ideal. Two rows of tabs would be better than both. Currently, that's basically impossible in XUL without a lot of work, though, but that doesn't mean we haven't thought about them.

11:03:24 <@[Not]Silver> I'm personally putting a lot of time and effort into a new window manager for ChatZilla, so that you can drag views about. This includes the potential to re-write how the tabs work, but scrolling would be the bottom of the 3 possible options.
11:03:40 < Mardeg> what about the method of a "popup menu containing the rest of the tabs" thingy?
11:04:14 < Mardeg> the one I get in IE when I hide the menus I don't use much
11:04:17 <@[Not]Silver> That has its own usability issues. It's probably better than scrolling in that area, though, but only if done well.
11:05:00 <@[Not]Silver> (it would need a shortcut to open, ability to do all normal tab operations on the menu items, etc. - not impossible, but it's effort to get right)
11:07:34 < Sander> Silver: won't Firefox use the scrolling thing though, so there'd be benefit in doing the same, rather than having the user learn yet another paradigm? (Not that I'm in favour of scrolling either, but consistency often is good.)
11:08:19 <@[Not]Silver> Firefox will use whatever the wind today tells it to. It never seems to do anything well.
11:08:38 < Sander> heh, true. :)

11:08:46 < Mardeg> what's the double >> thing that brings up the hidden menus?
11:08:52 <@[Not]Silver> Both FF and IE (FF is obviously the copier here) are going for scrolling tabs with a popup menu.
11:08:56 * Mardeg is sure there's a name for it
11:08:57 <@[Not]Silver> Chevron
11:09:12 <@[Not]Silver> Both IE and FF are browsers, however.
11:09:14 < Mardeg> yeah :)
11:09:27 <@[Not]Silver> So blindly copying is not necessarilly smart.

11:10:20 < Mardeg> perhaps a heiracrchy popup that gives the connected networks with submenus of the channels?
11:10:32 <@[Not]Silver> The thing is with the popup is there's two options: what FF and IE do (and against what chevrons usually do) which is show all items, even those visible.
11:10:42 <@[Not]Silver> Or to use a real chevron and only show hidden items.
11:11:00 <@[Not]Silver> Mardeg: I've long wanted a menu that listed networks, and channels as submenus.
11:11:20 < Mardeg> good to see I'm full of recycled ideas :)
11:11:21 <@[Not]Silver> Whether that, or a single tree thing, would actually be useful I'm not sure.

11:14:54 <@[Not]Silver> X-Chat's gone and added a tree view of channels/networks, but it takes up a huge amount of space.
