What does the average person like that a computer (and potentially, we) can provide? Attention, socializing with other people, entertainment, music, etc.... But most of these things are already taken by services like Facebook and StumbleUpon. They target the general audience. Sure, there are programmers who have Facebook acounts and programming-related Facebook applications and StumbleUpon can certainly bring up programming-related news. But it's still not aimed at programmers specifically...and websites like Facebook, which there are a lot of, focus more on just plain old....conversation.

So, at last, here's the idea:

This Qt-based program will run in the system tray. Users could create projects at their will, which our program would automatically keep track of them to the user's liking. It could be configured to keep track of every build, submitting them to a publically accessible server. Or, it could be configured to merely keep track of the number of builds, and then when the user is ready, they could submit it - THE SOURCE - to the server. (These files would go in a "unstable/messy" category)
The source would be laballed with a title, description, language, and any necessary dependencies, or something like that.

When the user feels the project is finished, it could be sent to the "stable" category on a server. People could rate these programs (note that they're viewing the source, though) and do stuff like that. This would affect the rating of the author or authors of the software. People could create programming "groups" or "teams," in which case the overall "team's" rating could be affected. A select few moderators could then pick software that they feel is very stable and good and put it in the "quality" category on a server.

Then, people could search for code. They could specify things like rating and language of the code. They could take a risk and use "unstable" code, safely use "quality" code, or take the middle option - "stable/normal" code...or something like that.

When a user started up this program the latest news and statistics would be displayed.

Now, that's not all it would be. This is something that would be a "must have" application for programmers. It would have different tabs with recommended IDEs, compilers, libraries, etc. People would submit new choices, and they could then be rated, which accordingly would "bump" them to the top of the list - when sorted by rating, of course.

This could also potentially integrate with other websites...maybe even websites like Facebook or StumbleUpon.

There would also be a web-based component, where...uh...I don't feel like typing any more...use your imagination.....
