what's going on?

ON SECOND THOUGHT for the last weeks (before I even tried changing my linux distro) I recognized a weird pattern
1. I could always connect if I used windows
2. If I booted linux (at that time kanotix) I could not connect to the internet (at the time I didn't investigate why)
2.1 If I rebooted linux (that is rebooted while in linux and chose linux AGAIN on GRUB menu) I could connect
3. When I initially booted from the ubuntu live cd the pattern in 2.1 repeated
4. Will simply rebooting linux (in the last few days I've been hopping between my two partitions) allow me connect, and if so why is this going on?!?!?!
