Hello again. This news page has pretty much been made obsolete by the creation of the new blog for Slepp. For future updates, you should be checking the projects categories on the blog. Thanks!

Some database optimizations have been made, as well as rehoming the backend server to a faster, beefier one. So, the delays should be greatly reduced for page loads and other things.

Also, the entire site is getting pretty strict with regard to spam comments and posts. Please let me know if you find the spam protections are interfering with your regular use of the Pastebin.

An entirely new commenting system has been implemented on Pastebin.ca. There are three types of comments: general public comments, comments about a post, and comments about polls. You may reply to any comment that someone has already made, or make your own comment, on any paste or poll. The comments on pastes will show at the end of the paste itself, poll comments are available from the list of polls, and general comments are in the Comments section from the menu.

If you have any suggestions on improving the comment system, feel free to leave a comment in the general comments. I get e-mailed those ones.

Due to the gracious translation by ZeBob, we now have a completed French translation of the Pastebin. The German translation is still in progress at this time.

This was actually old news, but the Pastebin provides two RSS feeds for both news and posts. As more sections come online, it will also grow to include those. You can subscribe to the Posts RSS Feed or the News RSS Feed. The posts feed will provide an RSS feed of the most recent posts to the Pastebin for those users who are just endlessly curious about what is being pasted, while the News RSS is this information here.

The methods to do differences between posts is now in place. For an example, take a look at http://pastebin.ca/diff.php?id1=10741&id2=10742. Presently, to view a list of changes between posts, you would go to the Entire Post Tree/Differences from a post that has updates, or which is an update to another post. Then you can select revisions to see the differences between. Work is in progress for a more generic difference engine to make it easier to select which posts you want to compare.

This system is based on the modified preorder tree traversal methods of tracking pastes. It allows any updated pastes to be tracked back through their progression of posts over time. The trees look like this sample tree. This is the same tree as the differences available above.

I switched over from the previous syntax highlighter to GeSHi 1.0.6. Let me know what you think. Three languages, PL/I, Scheme, and Ruby are not in GeSHi, but I will be adding the support for them back in shortly. Also, there are some new languages available for highlighting (Action Script, Ada, Apache Configurations, Assembly (NASM), ASP, BASH Scripts, Delphi, HTML 4.0 Strict, JavaScript, LISP, Lua, Microprocessor ASM, Objective C, Visual Basic .NET).

I created the section to allow anyone to create their own sub-domain on pastebin.ca for hosting their own pastebin, private or public. Check out Get a Pastebin.

I've optimized a bunch of the SQL queries used by the Pastebin, so hopefully it is a bit faster in general. I cut down the page time from about 1 second under load to about 50ms under load. Not too bad, I think.

I have started on the translations from English into French and German. The little flags at the top right will change the page into the language the flag represents. Of course, I cheated and used Google, but I'd like to hear from anyone willing to fix up the translations.

I added a list of randomized 'Anonymous' names to the system, so instead of all the posts labelled Anonymous, there will now be a bit of a mix up in names so that it might be easier to identify untitled posts on the sidebar. Let me know if you have any suggestions of other random titles to set when it is left blank.

There are new features in the works, including (but definitely not limited to):

  • Ability to update post titles in place
  • Ability to delete and modify posts based on a password, user account, or IP
  • Hinted in the note above, user accounts
  • Improved/updated highlighting engine
  • Language translations, if anyone wants to translate from English for me
  • Changeable colour themes (just because I can)

If you have any other suggestions, let me know. Anyone interested in seeing more than text being able to be pasted? I'm cautious about that, but it might be useful. How about making the input text area larger? Or setting a default expiry time on posts?

Advertising information is available for those who wish to look into it. I didn't want to step on any toes of the people who were asking, so I made it an open forum to try for advertising space. (Sorry)

Someone offered a lot of money for the domain name, and I'm curious who. If it was you, I'd like to know. I said no, if anyone is curious.
