I've posted a more detailed problem description here for your perusal.
Problem:
It's impossible to login or create new users. The superadmin account does not work. Logging in with superadmin does not give any "wrong password/wrong username" messages, but the log-in still fails, since the log-in link remains in the upper -right corner. Clearing cookies at the browser does not help.
I tried using postgresql instead, with identical results.
If I import the default wiki xar, the administration link in the upper right hand disappears. Logging in remains impossible.
Installation steps taken so far:
Container installation:
Download Tomcat 6.0.16
extract said container to /opt/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/
Download xwiki-enterprise-1.2.1 war.
Extract war into webapps.
Setup mysql
mysql -u root -e "create database xwiki"
mysql -u root -e "grant all privileges on xwiki.* to xwiki@127.0.0.1 identified by 'xwiki'"
Download mysql connector jar into WEB-INF/lib
uncomment mysql section from hibernate config
uncomment superadmin line from xwiki.cfg
run /opt/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/bin/startup.sh
