ITS Technology Seminar Series Begins 10th Year with EDUCAUSE Information Security Leader Rodney Petersen on September 25
Digital technologies have opened up a new world of possibilities for students to access and share music, movies and other media. Unfortunately, this capability also introduces an array of thorny issues for students, information technology staff, and campus administrators. At the core of the controversy is whether students are violating copyright law through the use of peer-to-peer filesharing networks. P2P filesharing is facilitated by the Internet, which allows students to utilize free software to share music or movies on their computers with other network users.

Petersen, co-editor of the Educause book “Computer and Network Security in Higher Education” and also coordinator of the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer Security Task Force will discuss:
* What are the legal consequences under copyright law for illegal filesharing?
* What are the security risks of using P2P networks?
* What are the ethical considerations for the appropriate use of intellectual property?
* Are there new business models that can sufficiently sustain the copyright industry?
* How should college and university officials respond to the use of campus networks for illegal filesharing?
* What are the political ramifications for institutions of higher education if they do not act to curb the abuse associated with illegal filesharing?
