The design of this site is moving forward, but the general printing process is not. Why is that? Ramen met laptop in a rather spectacular fashion. Right now I'm praying that the HD in that laptop is okay, because it did take a fairly large amount of ramen and the total amount of damage was almost $1500. Luckily, the person at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store said that it should be okay. And yes, I had to visit the mall at 7AM on Black Friday to get this looked at. Not only that, but I had to deal with an insurance company, and then the mall once again in the evening. <br /><br /> So what does this mean for DBPhoto? Well, when I get the HD recovered, I can begin the process of actually printing and shipping the photos. Due to the time of year and the lack of an actual store, I can't take orders yet. I wouldn't be able to guarantee Christmas delivery, and I would be compromising your security. Since everybody is still in tryptophan mode, I have to wait until Monday to get the HD looked at. The vertical spacing in the bars on top and bottom were a pain, but that issue is resolved, as well as the issues with line-height on headers in the news vs. on other pages. One thing that I'm considering right now is increasing the space that the line is padded (since right now it looks kinda funny compared to the larger space between the date and the general news)<br /><br /> The other ideas I have may or may not be as... big. Right now I'm quite pleased with the way that the site loads on dial-up, so I don't want to destroy that. However, I may decide to install something called PHPnews. This would make writing these a lot easier, as it formats them for me. However, I have a bit of pride saying that I've coded all of this by hand (save for the gallery). The PHPnews would also allow for commenting on the entries, effectively turning this into a blog. It would also sort things into pages, so that once I overflow the main page with news, it would fix it for me. I don't know the knowhow to write that myself, however.<br /><br /> The final thing is that it has come to my attention that the gallery is both slow and does not match the general scheme for this site. Again, keep in mind that my knowledge of PHP is, well, nonexistant. A new gallery would be largely doable once I get my images back (although I could probably still just steal them from myself), but the convenience of this gallery would be lost. Right now, I can just log on, click a button to upload, and everything's done already. Nice and simple. Thumbnails and such are automatically supported, but like I said, it's slow. Then again, once I get the meat and bones of it done, it'll be mostly complete. I dealt with finals, then went home for Christmas break. I did recieve the ever-so-coveted DSLR for Christmas (a Nikon D50), along with a <i>Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18 - 55mm f/3.5 - 5.6G ED</i> lens. Very long name, but it's essentially a kit lens. I love it so far, and have actually taken about 500 photos already, including those taken in a brief dash to the desert with Jake.<br /><br /> Even with the new camera, I have not forgotten about this site, and intend to continue to do work with it (New Year's esolution, anyone?). I still don't have my old HD recovered, so the process of printing still has to wait. For now, I may try to consolidate a sign gallery (more for informational purposes than art purposes, but if I can get an artistic shot of a sign, the more the better!). As some people know, I have not been neglecting the photographs, for the most part. I had about six weeks off, due to the fact that I was rather busy with another hobby of mine, robotics, but I'm back taking photographs. In addition, this week, I've spent most of this week getting a new gallery in place (finally!) and I can now announce that it is mostly done. Big thanks goes out to my friend <a href=\"http://www.artistjake.com\">Jake</a> for helping me out with the PHP and getting my knowledge up above... well... none. The new gallery can be found <a href=\"http://www.dbphoto.biz/gallery.php\">here</a>, including new photos that were not in the previous one. I'm keeping Gallery2 for now, since it has options for very fast uploads, which I can use for large trips (like the one that Jake and I are planning to startin about five weeks). The new gallery is, by my estimation, about twice as fast as the old gallery.<br /> <br /> Something that more observant people will notice is that the gallery no longer carries a \"cart\" option. This is intentional. While selling prints is possible in the distant future, I have decided that for now it is not particularly high on my priority list. I do still have schooling that I have to worry about, not to mention that the time that I would use taking care of a potential business could be used taking more photos (not to mention that it's more fun). So, what does that do to this site? Quite simply, the focus will be shifted away from the store and will be put more on what matters - the photos. This is one reason that I pushed so hard on getting the gallery ready (and easy to maintain, at that). During March there were 79 unique hits to the site, which isn't bad, considering that I haven't done much work to really promote the site yet. For whatever reason, January had the most unique hits (115). I want to break 100 again somewhat soon (since the site is more or less ready for public viewing), so let people know. One thing I want to do to increase viewership is to add RSS to the gallery, which has been added to my things-to-learn-how-to-do list (like the PHP for the gallery itself was several months ago).<br /><br /> In other news the trip to Glacier with <a href=\"http://www.artistjake.com\">Jake</a> is drawing nearer. Less than a month until we depart. One thing that is driving me crazy is that I have not received a job offer for the summer yet, which is the condition that I have before I get the coveted Nikon 18-200 VR lens. If I want to actually find it, I'm going to have to either pay a high premium or look around for a period of time that will potentially be too long. Why do I even want such a lens? Yes, it does have a few quality issues. When Jake and I were at Death Valley last March, we happened by a Coyote at the side of the road. I had my 18-55 on the camera at the time, and he had his 18-200. Needless to say, he could take shots of the coyote zoomed in with no problem, while my shot was somewhat mediocre since I could not zoom in far enough to make a decent shot.<br /><br /> As for the site itself, I have added several images to the <a href=\"http://www.dbphoto.biz/gallery.php\">gallery</a> recently, so go and check them out! I am very happy to say that the RSS feed is more or less finished, to the point that I can now add the link to it. You can view the RSS feed <a href=\"http://www.dbphoto.biz/rss.php\">here</a>. The best way that I have seen to view it is by adding it to your Firefox Live Bookmarks. Google Reader also displays it, but in a format that I'm not a fan of (it links to something other than what I want it too, and that is unfixable for now, unfortunately). There may be a bug with a tag that I used, so if you see a distorted aspect ratio image, please let me know.<br /><br /> I also killed one of the major IE bugs on the rendering of this site. It finally will display all of the links in my navbar on the same line. It really is a pain to develop so that IE users can see the site content without too much hinderance, since the browser itself does not confine to W3C standards. It does funny things with CSS as a result, as people who view this site in it know (about 25% at last check). There are still some major issues with how it displays the gallery, which are much harder to fix. I will do my best to make it look mildly presentable (seeing the images left-justified with the links in the center is just not pretty), but there is likely only so much I can do. It is much easier for the users on Internet Explorer to upgrade to another browser (my personal preference is FireFox 2.0, and that is what I am developing for), than for me to attempt to get everything to display the same, even the navigation bar. Nevertheless, I will continue to have things look halfway decent in IE, as to appeal to all audiences.<br /><br /> With that said, there are still several things to do. I want to add more PHP support to this front page. This will let me update it easier (such as the gallery, which is quite easy to update), and it will allow for paging (to keep the main page from getting too cluttered once more news is added), and for another RSS feed for main page updates.
